My Father, My Lord/Hofshat Kaits

Synopsis

This sensitively-directed film depicts the staggering price that a family can pay for an obsession with ritualistic observance, even in the face of enormous tragedy.  An ultra-Orthodox rabbi (played by Assi Dayan) is devoted to his wife and young son, loving them deeply.  However, his rigid adherence to the minutiae of Jewish religious commandments makes him oblivious to their most basic emotional needs.  As this film suggests, Abraham’s binding of Isaac can have subtle parallels in today’s world, often with unanticipated consequences.
