Synopsis
Mohammad Abu Mustafa, a 4-month-old Palestinian born without an immune system, will die without a bone-marrow transplant, a procedure that can be done only in an Israeli hospital. A desperate plea from his doctor to save the boys life leads prominent Israeli journalist Shlomi Eldar to document this complex and emotional story. As Israeli doctors at Tel HaShomer Hospital in Tel Aviv put forth their best efforts to cure the child amidst the political backdrop of the 2008-2009 conflict in Gaza, the audience is forced to confront the difficult realities faced by everyone involved in the struggle for Mohammed's life. There is a special pride in the celebration of life, even as the ugliness of battle rages. FOLLOWING THE FILM
In 2007, Shlomi Eldar received the prestigious Sokolov Prize (Israel's Pulitzer) for his reporting on Arab affairs on Israel's commercial Channel 10. For years, Eldar's coverage has focused on Gaza, and his 2005 book, Eyeless in Gaza, cautioned the Israeli public against the growing power of the fundamentalist Islamic Hamas movement. Eldar holds an MA in Middle East Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Robert Pearl will moderate the discussion.
